When people build a custom home, they spend a lot of time choosing finishes, fixtures, flooring, and cabinetry. One plumbing decision that often gets overlooked is planning for a hot water recirculation system. In larger homes, it can take a surprising amount of time for hot water to reach the furthest bathrooms or kitchen. During that time, clean water is simply running down the drain while you wait. Planning a dedicated recirculation line during the rough in allows a programmable or demand controlled pump to deliver hot water much faster where it's needed. The right design depends on the home's layout and the homeowner's goals, but it's a conversation worth having before construction moves past the framing stage.
